Weekly quote #5: Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. – Theodore Roosevelt

This is my favourite quote ☀️. I will put it in my office so I see it every day. If you want to do non-standard things, you choose the difficult path above the riskless one. Many people don’t dare to, mainly because they are afraid about others’ opinions if they would fail or make that hard decision.

The famous ‘I told you…’. ‘You will not give up this beautiful job, will you?’ ‘Why would you do that?’ advice.

👉Once you live up to this quote, you only start taking advice from a few: those who understand this quote and live to it… You also start neglecting advice. Actually most of it.

👉Pay attention to the word ‘enjoy’. If you love your work, if you realise that struggling is inherently part of life, you are achieving exactly what is meant. So it’s not always rocket science. It’s about being happy because you found the reasons for it and know you are going the right direction.

Curious to hear your opinion. Any thoughts about weekly quote No5? 👇👇👇

  1. I bought a calligraphed print of this quote back in the 1970s and still have it stuck on one of my file cabinets. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year at age 70, and was just thinking today about all of the risks I’ve taken throughout my life, resulting in both triumphs and spectacular failures. I still love the quote and find myself wondering whether Teddy had ADHD. 🙂
